The story of scribbled walls in pediatrics : tiny hearts
A full circle moment of my very first posting in clinicals, started from gynae/obs and ending with pediatrics, from fetal life to development of a child. There are so many stories yet to be narrated in every bed of the patient i met except for the bits of chief complain we get to hear for diagnosis. But for some little, who doesn't know how to describe what she is going through, it just empties my heart with solace to see those little warriors battling in a room scribbled with cartoons but most importantly with a hope to win over.
Despite all those pain, being unable to narrate the story, they pass their little smiles and giggles to us, indicating how strong they are. Life feels very unfair and challenging here. They will reach through the light at the end of the tunnel, only the navigating journey seems to be a little rough.
A 4 year old girl, who was so cute, playing with her tiny green bangles of shrawan worn on her tiny hands sitting wisely, waiting for her mother who has also gone for a checkup. An adorable one year old with nasal prongs in his nostrils had wide open eyes to look up around him. A hyperactive kid who had autism was more happy and she loved being chased by her mother in the hospital corridors. A 6 year old might process the brief understanding of the surrounding but will he know he has been diagnosed with a stone in his gallbladder.
As a medical student, we go through the record files, know the disease but might never know the feeling of the hospital stay. Also i am not welcomed always, when kids see us they cry, because we are bunch of stranger in scrubs and they fear like hell, it is just another immunizing vaccine or we will hurt them in this procedure. How do i explain to you little one, you are like a teacher to me and i have to study your condition to get ahead to help you out.
Additionally, it has also been a learning of the strength that the patient party own. When someone you love has to go through pain, the visibility of equal amount of pain resonated among the person sitting on the stool beside the patients bed. The masked faces of toughness among them and their presence to protect was a parallel journey of healing in the wards.
For these months, it has been a journey of seeing the wards slowly go vacant help me in ways to heal me as well. Bed no. .... has been discharged or in the arrangements of getting discharged is just another positive setup that they have overcome this hurdle and slowly everything will be fine. I know as a medical student its important to have patients so we can learn the procedure of diagnosis and healing, but as an empathetic human wishing speedy recovery and perhaps the best of every history i have taken is the ultimate hope i have and slowly as days pass i might be the reason to have the privilege to heal them. And perhaps their healing will become my own as well.
